About Us
The Graduate Student Parent Project (GSPP) is a resource and network oriented program that is designed to address the special challenges graduate student parents face in their attempts to balance school and family responsibilities at the University of California, Berkeley. Graduate student parents are supported by this program through the presence of staff at campus committees and events that are tailored to address issues like dependent care policies that affect graduate student parents. As an effort to advocate for the needs of graduate student parents, research is also being conducted to explore graduate student parent's child care expenses in addition to the resources available to them within this university.
The GSPP supports the graduate student parent community in the following three ways:
1) By assisting organizing and community building efforts that are designed to provide graduate student parents an opportunity to share resources.
One example of this effort to network was witnessed in the GSPP's donation of toys, food, and picnic supplies for the Graduate Student Parent Picnic, which took place on September 9, 2007 at Cordonices Park in Berkeley. The pictures below are just a few of the many attendees present at this event!
2) By conducting research on the needs, population characteristics, academic performance, and opportunities available to graduate student parents.
The Graduate Division and the Graduate Assembly at the University of California, Berkeley conducted a needs assessment of graduate student parents in order to learn more about the hurdles they confront in their attempts to balance work and family obligations. (Note: This study was funded by a grant from the UC Berkeley Graduate
Division. The report represents the
opinions of the authors and not necessarily those of the Graduate
Division.)

3) By disseminating information to graduate student parents, departments and the Graduate Division in order to improve this population's ability to balance work and family responsibilities.
