ABOUT US

The Graduate Women's Project (GWP) is the only program at the University of California, Berkeley devoted solely to addressing the concerns of graduate women. GWP was first established in 1981 in response to an overwhelming demand for campus resources that would address graduate women's personal, social, and academic needs. Since 1985, GWP has operated as its own independent project, supporting, organizing, and sponsoring a range of activities and programs. GWP also functions as a clearinghouse for graduate campus women's groups, and as an advocate for graduate women's concerns.

CURRENT AND PREVIOUS PROJECTS AND EVENTS

The Graduate Women's Resource Guide

The GWRG is a free booklet available to everyone that includes dozens of campus and community resources, listing everything from female-owned businesses, to nightclubs, to health groups, to social and artist spaces, to political groups, and more. Updated for 2008 to 2010. Sponsored by the Graduate Women's Project of the Graduate Assembly with support from the Graduate Division. Please stop by Anthony Hall for a copy!

The Graduate Women's Caucus

The GWC brings together graduate women from a broad range of disciplines as an apolitical vehicle to facilitate discussion and action on issues and concerns important to graduate women. They also serve as a committee to lead and advise the Graduate Women's Project on program direction. GWC will hold monthly informal lunches which, in addition to programming events, will function as a support network for issues relevant to graduate women.

Distinguished Women Lecture Series

Community women and national lecturers are invited to speak and interact with graduate women on their research or efforts in the community. If there are any women who you would like to hear give a public talk, or who you know are speaking and whom other women on campus would like to hear, please contact the GWP coordinator. Past speakers included Bettina Apetheker who spoke on "Re-framing Feminist Visions."

Power Lunches

Lunches with UC Berkeley women leaders including key lecturers and deans. These lunches are intended to be informal in order to encourage graduate women to socialize and network with these successful women in the Berkeley community. Previous semesters included a power lunch with Dean Mary Ann Mason, who spoke on parenting and academia, in addition to hosting a roundtable with six prominent Berkeley professors who also spoke to their experience as academics and parent. If there is a woman on campus you would like to see at one of these events, please contact the GWP coordinator.

Mixers and Receptions

GWP holds social mixers and receptions every semester with complimentary drinks and food. In Fall 2005, we hosted a reception with free salsa classes, and in Fall 2006 we hosted a California Wine and Cheese Mixer. Our most recent reception was the Spring 2008 End of the Year Spring Fiesta with DJ Rosa la Rumorosa and raffle gifts from Berkeley Bowl, Cal Massage, and Good Vibrations! Get out of the library and come socialize with other graduate students. Everyone is invited to attend!

Workshops

These workshops bring campus and community resources together for graduate women.  Previous workshops included a ‘Stress Management Workshop’ with psychologists from the Tang Center who conduct a one-hour workshop and massage therapists from RSF to provide free massages along with a “Self Defense for Women Workshop’ by instructors from the YWCA and the Martial Arts Program at the Regional Sports Facility (RSF). The GWP also had creative and wellness workshops on "Afro-Brasilian Dance" and "Restorative Yoga" open to all graduate women at UC Berkeley. If you would like information about any of the activities listed here or would like to propose a program for the GWP to undertake, you can reach the Graduate Women's Project Coordinator below.
